Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has successfully completed Intermediate Overhauling (IOH) Phase 1 of all its 52 metro train sets, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to enhance passenger safety, comfort, and service reliability.
Metro services in Chennai have been in operation since 2015, with CMRL adhering to a rigorous maintenance regime. This includes monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and annual inspections, along with mandatory fitness certification to ensure smooth and safe operations.
In addition to routine checks, every metro train undergoes Intermediate Overhauling (IOH)âa comprehensive maintenance process carried out before the next major overhaul. The completion of IOH Phase 1 across the entire fleet reinforces CMRLâs commitment to maintaining high operational standards and delivering dependable metro services to commuters across the city.
During the IOH process, trains are fully dismantled and inspected in detail. Critical components such as wheels, suspension systems, axles, brakes, electrical equipment, and air-conditioning units are examined, repaired or replaced as required. Wheels are reshaped for smooth performance, and axles are tested using advanced techniques to detect any hidden defects. The interiors and exteriors are thoroughly cleaned using eco-friendly materials to ensure hygiene and passenger comfort.
