The Tamil Nadu government has clarified that there was no earthquake in the Mayiladuthurai district earlier this week, despite reports of a loud noise and public concern. Officials said that on the morning of February 2, residents in areas around Sirkazhi and Tharangambadi, both close to Mayiladuthurai, reported hearing a sudden, loud sound between about 10:20 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Many people shared the experience on social media, leading to anxiety and speculation that an earthquake may have occurred. In response, the Mayiladuthurai district collector issued a statement through the state government’s official social media account reassuring the public that no tremors or seismic activity were detected in the region at that time. The statement said the noise was likely caused by a jet aircraft during training, not by an earthquake or ground shaking. The government urged people not to spread incorrect information, emphasising that the region is safe and no geological event took place.
