Actress and politician Kasthuri has openly criticised actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan following his recent speech in the Rajya Sabha — the Upper House of the Indian Parliament. The remarks have drawn attention amid growing political discussion about Haasan’s entry into national politics.
Kasthuri, who is active on social media and has been involved in politics, responded to queries about Haasan’s parliamentary address with sharp criticism. According to her statements, she feels that many people did not fully understand Haasan’s speech, and she questioned both the content and its clarity. She suggested that Haasan’s audience lacked awareness of figures like Periyar and of Haasan himself, implying disconnect between his political messaging and public comprehension. Her comments reflected a dismissive tone toward both the speech and the actor-politician’s approach to addressing the nation’s issues.
In her critique, Kasthuri also accused Haasan of making remarks that offended Telugu language pride, referencing her interpretation of what he said in Parliament. She claimed that he started his speech with comments suggesting Telugu was insulted, though independent reports emphasise that Haasan’s actual speech in Rajya Sabha focused on broader issues and citizenship rights.
Kamal Haasan, founder of the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party and a Rajya Sabha MP, has recently attracted diverse reactions for his political interventions. In his first Lok Sabha address, Haasan raised concerns about electoral processes, arguing that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise might be hindering citizens’ right to vote rather than facilitating it. His comments sparked conversations about democratic participation and the electoral roll revision process.
