The Tamil Nadu government has approved the construction of a new central prison complex in Madurai, aiming to modernize and expand correctional infrastructure in the region.
Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu announced that the state has given clearance for the project, which also includes relocating the existing central prison and the special prison for women currently in Coimbatore. The entire initiative is part of a larger prison infrastructure upgrade across the state, with new district prison complexes also planned for Thanjavur, Salem, and Namakkal.
Officials say the move will help address overcrowding at the current Madurai facility and improve conditions for inmates, taking into account contemporary standards and welfare needs.
Construction is expected to proceed in phases, with modern facilities and expanded capacity to serve the justice and correctional system more effectively.
