The Greater Chennai Corporation has announced a strict new action to curb air pollution in the city. Vehicles that contribute to dust and other pollution — especially those transporting construction materials and waste — will now face a spot fine of ₹25,000 for violations.
Under the city’s Clean and Safe Construction Guidelines 2025, all vehicles carrying construction debris or materials must be properly covered so that dust does not escape into the air or on the roads. Trucks or other vehicles that are overloaded, poorly covered, or allow construction dust or particles to spill onto streets will be stopped by authorities. Those found violating the rules will be immediately seized, and the hefty fine will be imposed on the spot.
Seized vehicles will only be released after the full fine is paid. The Corporation has urged the public, vehicle owners and construction companies to cooperate fully with enforcement efforts as part of a broader drive to keep Chennai cleaner and healthier for residents.
