Suburban electric train operations through Chennai Egmore Railway Station have been significantly reduced due to ongoing redevelopment and maintenance works.
The ₹820 crore redevelopment project, launched in 2024, is currently focused on maintenance work on Platforms 10 and 11 and the adjoining tracks. Owing to these works, EMU services are being operated from Platforms 5 and 6 instead.
Earlier, nearly 204 suburban EMU trains were run daily on the Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpattu corridor via Egmore. The number has now been temporarily brought down to 69 services to manage operational limitations.
In addition, speed restrictions have been imposed in certain stretches, increasing travel time. Commuters from Tambaram Railway Station and Chengalpattu Junction railway station are facing delays, particularly during peak hours.
Railway authorities have said that regular services will resume once the maintenance and redevelopment works are completed.
