The cast and crew of the upcoming psychological romantic thriller Oh Butterfly came together in the city for an engaging press meet ahead of the film’s theatrical release on March 6. The event saw the presence of the entire team, who shared insights into the making of what they described as a unique exploration of relationships through a thriller lens.
Oh Butterfly marks the maiden production venture of Anthill Cinema, produced in association with Palampur Talkies, with Tulsea serving as consulting producer. Written and directed by debutant Vijay Ranganathan, the film features an ensemble cast comprising Nivedhithaa Sathish, Ciby Chandran, Attul, Nassar, Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli and Geetha Kailasam in pivotal roles.
Blending the fragility and unpredictability of relationships within a psychological thriller framework, the film aims to present an emotionally layered narrative. Cinematographer Vedharaman Sankaran revealed that the team worked tirelessly to ensure the visuals appeared effortless on screen, urging audiences to watch the film in theatres and support it upon release.
Music composer Vaisagh Somanath noted that the collaboration with the director was seamless as both shared a clear creative vision. He described the experience as fulfilling and encouraged audiences to embrace the film.
Producer Anand S. Shah shared that when Vijay first narrated the script, he found it refreshingly different from conventional commercial ventures. He appreciated the director’s focus on content-driven cinema and highlighted how Vijay chose to channel resources directly into production quality rather than unnecessary extravagance.
Producer Venkky, speaking at a film event for the first time, recalled hearing the story four years ago and eventually coming on board as a producer. He praised Vijay’s meticulous approach, recounting how the team scouted nearly 35 houses before finalising a shooting location and navigated multiple challenges in securing permissions.
Actor Attul expressed gratitude to the director for trusting him with the role. He said reading the script instilled a strong sense of responsibility in him and described sharing screen space with Nassar as an honour. He also lauded the technical team, calling them the backbone of the project.
Ciby Chandran spoke candidly about his struggles in the industry and how being part of Oh Butterfly felt meaningful. He reflected on the inherent suspense within relationships, stating that the film delves into themes of honesty, fear, mental health and contemporary relationship complexities, making it relevant to modern audiences.
Nivedhithaa Sathish described the project as deeply emotional for her. After dedicating nearly a year to another film, she went through a period of self-doubt before Oh Butterfly came her way. Despite undergoing surgery at the start of production, the team waited for her recovery — a gesture she said she would always cherish. She highlighted that the film explores human emotions within a relatively unexplored genre space and was shot in sync sound to enhance authenticity.
Director and producer Vijay Ranganathan revealed that he has been part of the film industry for nearly eight years and always aspired to create something distinct. Although the story was written years ago, he reworked it extensively before taking it to production. He acknowledged the difficulty of pitching a film that did not conform to established cinematic formulas but credited his friends-turned-producers for believing in the vision.
Oh Butterfly is gearing up for its big-screen release on March 6, with the team expressing confidence that audiences will embrace this unconventional cinematic attempt.
