Long queues were witnessed at several petrol bunks across Tamilnadu as motorists rushed to fill petrol and diesel fearing a possible shortage amid the ongoing Iran–Israel conflict in West Asia.
Two-wheelers and cars were seen lined up outside fuel stations in many parts of the city, with the rush continuing late into the night. In some areas, petrol bunks reportedly shut early after witnessing unusually heavy demand.
Many residents said they rushed to fill their tanks due to rumours circulating on social media that the war in West Asia could disrupt fuel supplies. The fear triggered panic buying, with some people even purchasing petrol in bottles and cans to store for future use.
Officials from oil companies such as Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, however, clarified that there is no shortage of petrol or diesel and that adequate stocks are available.
The sudden rush at petrol pumps also led to traffic congestion in some areas as long queues of vehicles spilled onto nearby roads.
Authorities have urged the public not to panic and to purchase fuel only as required.
