In a move to provide relief from the rising summer heat, the Greater Chennai Corporation has begun installing shade nets at major traffic signals across Chennai.
The initiative aims to protect motorists, particularly two-wheeler riders, from direct sunlight while waiting at busy traffic junctions during peak hours.
Officials said shade nets will be installed at about 40 important intersections in the first phase of the project. The move is expected to help commuters cope with increasing temperatures during the summer season.
Installation work has already begun at several key locations including North Usman Road, Binny Road Junction, Adyar Junction, EVR Periyar Salai near Ripon Building, Anna Nagar 3rd Avenue, Ennore High Road, Moolakadai Junction and Basin Bridge.
Civic officials said the green canopy structures will reduce heat exposure for motorists waiting at signals, making travel more comfortable and safer during hot afternoons.
Authorities added that the initiative is particularly aimed at helping daily commuters, delivery workers and public transport riders who spend long periods on the road during daytime traffic.
With temperatures gradually rising in Tamil Nadu, officials said the project is expected to provide much-needed relief to thousands of road users across the city during the peak summer months.
