The Chennai Metro Rail Limited has recorded a steady rise in passenger numbers, with the average daily ridership in the city reaching 4.64 lakh commuters.
According to data released by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, metro usage in Chennai has increased significantly over the past few years, reflecting the growing preference for metro travel among residents.
The figures show that the average daily ridership was about 1.90 lakh in 2021–22, which increased to 3.41 lakh in 2022–23 and further rose to 4.58 lakh in 2023–24. By December 2025, the daily ridership touched 4.64 lakh passengers, marking a steady growth in the use of the metro network.
Officials said the increase in passenger numbers is mainly due to improved connectivity, expansion of metro corridors and better last-mile transport facilities. The metro has increasingly become one of the most reliable and convenient modes of public transport in the city, helping commuters avoid traffic congestion and reduce travel time.
With ongoing expansion projects and plans to connect more parts of the city, the Chennai Metro network is expected to attract even more passengers in the coming years, further strengthening the urban transport system in Chennai.
