Tehran, Mar 16: Gulf Arab states reported new missile and drone attacks Sunday after Iran threatened to expand its military campaign and warned people to evacuate three major ports in the United Arab Emirates.
The attacks come as the Middle East conflict enters its third week, raising fears of a broader regional war.
The conflict began after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Feb. 28 targeting Iran’s nuclear and military facilities.
Both countries said the operation aimed to weaken Iran’s capabilities and encourage internal opposition to its leadership. Iran has since retaliated with missile and drone attacks against Israel and several neighbouring Gulf countries.
Air defence systems across the region, including in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, intercepted many incoming projectiles.
However, the repeated attacks have disrupted oil exports, shaken regional economies and caused fuel prices to rise globally.
Tensions intensified after Iran accused the United States of launching strikes on Kharg Island, home to Iran’s primary oil export terminal, from locations in the UAE.
Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi claimed the attacks originated from Emirati territory, though he provided no evidence.
The UAE strongly rejected the allegation, insisting it has not allowed its territory or airspace to be used for attacks on Iran.
Other Gulf countries hosting US military bases also denied involvement in the strikes.
Despite the denials, Iran has fired hundreds of missiles and drones toward Gulf countries during the war.
Tehran maintains it is targeting US assets in the region, though some strikes have reportedly hit civilian sites such as airports and oil facilities.
