As summer sets in, Chennai is already witnessing a steady rise in temperatures, with residents preparing for weeks of intense heat and humidity. Known for its long and often unforgiving summers, the city typically experiences soaring daytime temperatures accompanied by high moisture levels, making conditions particularly uncomfortable for daily life.
With the mercury climbing, the use of air conditioners is expected to surge across households and offices. However, experts caution that indiscriminate usage can lead to soaring electricity bills and increased strain on power infrastructure. Energy specialists recommend maintaining AC temperatures between 24°C and 26°C for optimal comfort and efficiency. “Setting the temperature too low not only increases power consumption but also affects health. A balanced setting ensures both comfort and sustainability,” said an energy consultant based in Chennai.
Health professionals also advise residents to use air conditioning wisely to avoid sudden temperature shocks. “Moving frequently between extreme outdoor heat and very cold indoor environments can trigger respiratory issues and fatigue. It’s important to maintain a moderate indoor climate,” noted a city-based physician. Proper ventilation, regular servicing of AC units, and using ceiling fans in conjunction with air conditioning can further improve efficiency.
Residents are also being encouraged to adopt simple cooling practices such as using curtains to block direct sunlight, staying hydrated, and avoiding peak afternoon exposure. As Chennai heads into the peak summer months, mindful energy use and health-conscious habits will be key to staying comfortable while managing the seasonal heat effectively.
