Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has welcomed the Centre’s approval for archaeological excavations at eight sites across the State, while also criticising delays in granting permission.
The clearance was given by the Archaeological Survey of India on March 13 under existing rules, following a proposal submitted by the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology in July 2025.
According to official sources, excavations will be carried out at key historical locations including Keezhadi and seven other sites spread across districts such as Sivaganga, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Coimbatore, Salem, and Nagapattinam. These sites are considered crucial for understanding ancient Tamil civilisation, including Sangam-era settlements, maritime trade centres, and Iron Age cultures.
Stalin described the approval as a result of persistent efforts by his government, stating that continuous pressure was applied on the Union government to grant permission in time for the excavation season. He reiterated that the State will continue to demand the release of pending excavation reports, particularly those related to Keezhadi.
However, the Chief Minister also took aim at the Centre over what he termed as delays in granting approval. Excavation work in Tamil Nadu is time-sensitive and typically carried out between January and mid-year, before monsoon conditions halt fieldwork.
