Chennai, March 24:
A tragic incident has been reported from Thanjavur, where a college student who met with an accident while following actor-turned-politician Vijay’s convoy has succumbed to his injuries after nearly three weeks of treatment.
The deceased, identified as Vignesh, a college student from Tiruchy, was among several fans who followed Vijay’s vehicle on two-wheelers earlier this month when the latter was travelling to attend a party meeting in Thanjavur.
The incident occurred along the Tiruchy–Thanjavur highway near Sengipatti, when bikes following Vijay’s convoy lost control amid the rush. Vignesh’s motorcycle reportedly crashed into a vehicle, leading to a serious accident.
Both Vignesh and his friend, who was riding pillion, sustained injuries. While his friend suffered fractures, Vignesh sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in Thanjavur.
Vignesh had been undergoing intensive treatment for the past 19 days. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries, plunging his family and friends into grief.
The incident has once again raised concerns over fan behaviour during political and public events involving popular personalities. Large groups attempting to follow convoys often lead to dangerous situations on highways, posing risks to both participants and the general public.
Authorities are expected to stress stricter traffic control and safety measures during such events to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
