Chennai, Mar 28:
A total of 6.48 lakh people have applied for inclusion of their names in the electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu, reflecting a significant response to the ongoing voter list revision exercise ahead of the Assembly elections.
Officials said the applications were received as part of the continuous process of updating electoral rolls, allowing eligible citizens—particularly first-time voters and those who had shifted residences—to register themselves. The drive is aimed at ensuring that no eligible voter is left out of the democratic process.
The surge in applications comes in the backdrop of a major clean-up of electoral rolls, during which lakhs of names were removed due to reasons such as duplication, death, or change of address. Recent revisions had seen over 97 lakh names deleted statewide to improve accuracy and transparency in the voter database.
Election authorities have been conducting special camps and awareness drives across districts to facilitate enrolment, corrections, and deletions. Applicants typically submit Form 6 for inclusion, while other forms are used for corrections and deletions.
Officials emphasised that the revision process is crucial to maintaining a free, fair, and inclusive electoral system, especially with the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections fast approaching.
