K. P. Sharma Oli, who led Nepal through several tumultuous periods and was in office during the violent Gen Z‑led protests in September 2025, was taken into custody on as authorities pursue accountability for the deadly crackdown that left dozens dead.
Police also arrested his former home minister, Ramesh Lekhak, amid an official investigation into the use of force against protesters. Authorities acted one day after the new government assumed office.
Oli, 74, oversaw the controversial response to mass demonstrations last year that were triggered by a government ban on major social media platforms and widespread frustration over corruption and governance failures.
