Rameshwaram, Apr 9:
In yet another incident, 10 fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy while fishing in the Palk Strait, reportedly for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).
According to reports, the fishermen had ventured into the sea from the Ramanathapuram coast when they were apprehended by Lankan naval personnel. Their mechanised boat was also seized.
Such arrests have been a recurring issue in the region, with fishermen often accused of inadvertently crossing maritime boundaries due to depleted fish resources on the Indian side.
Fishermen associations in Tamil Nadu have repeatedly urged both the State and Union governments to take diplomatic steps to secure the release of those detained and prevent further incidents.
The latest development has once again triggered concern among the fishing community, as several fishermen and boats continue to remain in Sri Lankan custody amid ongoing maritime disputes between the two countries.
