Peace efforts between the United States and Iran continue to face serious hurdles, with US Vice President JD Vance stating that deep-rooted mistrust remains the biggest obstacle to any breakthrough.
Vance said the lack of trust between Washington and Tehran cannot be resolved quickly, even as both sides show willingness to continue negotiations. His remarks came after high-level talks held in Islamabad failed to produce a concrete agreement despite prolonged discussions.
The negotiations, aimed at extending a fragile ceasefire and working towards a broader peace deal, broke down primarily over disagreements on Iran’s nuclear programme. The United States proposed a long-term freeze on uranium enrichment, while Iran pushed for a significantly shorter timeline, exposing a major gap between the two sides.
