As summer temperatures soar across Chennai, with the mercury often crossing 40°C, parents are increasingly looking for meaningful ways to keep children engaged indoors during the long vacation.
With outdoor play restricted due to heat and humidity, experts say this is an opportunity to nurture creativity, learning and family bonding within the comfort of home.
One of the most effective ways to engage children is through creative arts and crafts. Activities such as painting, origami, clay modelling and DIY projects not only keep children occupied but also enhance their imagination and motor skills.
“Creative expression is essential for a child’s emotional development. Even simple activities like drawing or making greeting cards can keep them happily engaged for hours,” says child psychologist Dr. V. Lakshmi.
Another growing trend is home-based learning through storytelling and reading. Parents are encouraging children to explore books beyond their academic curriculum, including Tamil literature, comics and global classics. Storytelling sessions, where children narrate or enact stories, are also gaining popularity.
“Reading builds focus and language skills, but more importantly, it opens up a child’s imagination. Summer is the perfect time to cultivate this habit,” notes educationist R. Suresh Kumar.
With digital access becoming widespread, interactive online learning and skill-building platforms are also being widely used. From coding basics and language learning to music and dance classes, children are exploring new interests virtually. However, experts caution against excessive screen time.
“Technology is a great enabler, but balance is key. Structured screen time combined with offline activities works best,” says parenting coach Anita Krishnan.
Indoor physical activity is equally important to ensure children remain active. Parents are turning to yoga, simple fitness routines and indoor games like carrom, chess and table tennis.
These activities not only promote physical health but also improve concentration and strategic thinking. “Children need movement, even indoors. A daily routine with some form of exercise helps maintain both physical and mental well-being,” says fitness trainer Karthik Raman.
Family engagement has also taken centre stage, with many households organising cooking sessions, indoor treasure hunts and board game evenings. Involving children in cooking simple dishes or baking not only teaches life skills but also strengthens family bonds.
“Children learn best when they are involved. Cooking together or playing games as a family creates lasting memories,” adds Dr Lakshmi.
Experts also highlight the importance of unstructured free time, allowing children to explore hobbies independently. Whether it is journaling, gardening on balconies, or building small science experiments, such activities encourage curiosity and self-learning.
As Chennai navigates another intense summer, the focus for parents is shifting from merely keeping children occupied to ensuring holistic development in a safe indoor environment. With the right mix of creativity, learning and play, this summer can become both enjoyable and enriching for children.
