Chennai, May 3:
The annual Agni Natchathiram period, widely known as Kathiri Veyil, is set to commence on May 4, ushering in the most intense phase of summer across Tamil Nadu.
The 25-day period, lasting until May 28, is typically marked by a sharp rise in temperatures, with several parts of the state likely to experience heatwave conditions. Weather observers indicate that inland districts and urban centres, including Chennai, may record significantly high daytime temperatures during this period.
Agni Natchathiram occurs when the Sun passes through specific stars in traditional astrology, a phase long associated with extreme heat. Authorities and health experts have advised the public to take precautionary measures such as staying hydrated, avoiding direct exposure to the sun during peak hours, and limiting outdoor activities.
The period also carries cultural and religious significance, with temples conducting special rituals, including water-based offerings, to symbolically mitigate the heat. Traditionally, many households avoid conducting auspicious events during these days due to prevailing weather conditions.
With temperatures expected to intensify, residents across Tamil Nadu are urged to remain cautious and take necessary steps to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses.
