Chennai, May 7

Chief Minister-designate C Joseph Vijay personally directed the withdrawal of convoy vehicles and enhanced security arrangements provided to him, saying the measures were causing inconvenience to the public, according to CTR Nirmal Kumar.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Nirmal Kumar said the decision to scale down the security presence around Vijay’s residence in Neelankarai and the party office in Panaiyur was taken solely on Vijay’s instructions and was not linked to any administrative development.
“It was our leader Vijay who informed the police that convoy movement and extensive security arrangements were unnecessary at this point, as they were affecting residents, neighbours and motorists,” he said.
According to TVK leaders, the heightened security deployment over the past few days had led to traffic congestion and inconvenience in the surrounding localities. Vijay reportedly felt that the public should not face restrictions or delays because of his movements before formally assuming office.
Nirmal Kumar added that Vijay had advised the police to suspend the special security arrangements for now in the interest of public convenience, stating that full security protocols could resume after he takes oath as Chief Minister.
Late on Wednesday night, convoy vehicles attached to Vijay’s security detail were withdrawn. On Thursday morning, police personnel stationed outside his residence were also removed, while metal detectors and other security equipment installed at the premises were dismantled.
