Chennai, May 11:
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Sunday resigned as MLA from the Tiruchy East Assembly constituency, choosing to retain his seat from Perambur after winning both constituencies in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Senior Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leaders and Ministers K.A. Sengottaiyan and P. Venkataramanan submitted his resignation letter to Assembly Secretary K. Srinivasan at the Secretariat, shortly before Vijay formally assumed office.
Having secured victories from two constituencies, Vijay was required under constitutional provisions to vacate one seat within the stipulated time. With this move, he will continue as the MLA from Perambur in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
The decision marks his first formal legislative step after leading the TVK to power in its maiden electoral outing. The development also mirrors a past precedent set by former Chief Minister J.
Jayalalithaa, who had resigned one of her seats after a dual victory before assuming office.
