Chennai, May 12:
Chennai is set for a significant transportation upgrade as the long-awaited metro rail extension connecting Chennai International Airport to Kilambakkam has officially entered the initial stage of execution. The ambitious infrastructure project is expected to transform mobility in the city’s southern suburbs while easing persistent traffic congestion along the busy Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road.
The proposed corridor will provide direct metro connectivity between the airport and the Kilambakkam Bus Terminus, one of Tamil Nadu’s largest integrated bus hubs catering to passengers travelling to southern districts. At present, commuters depend on a combination of suburban trains, MTC buses and private vehicles to cover this stretch, often facing severe congestion across key junctions such as Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, Perungalathur and Vandalur.
With rising population and rapid suburban expansion, residents have long demanded a seamless and efficient public transport link in South Chennai. The metro extension is expected to address these concerns by offering faster, more reliable connectivity between major transit points.
The Tamil Nadu government has approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project, which is estimated to cost ₹9,335 crore. The elevated metro corridor will span 15.46 kilometres and include 13 stations, strategically located to serve dense residential and commercial areas. Key proposed stations include Chennai Airport, Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, Perungalathur, Vandalur, Arignar Anna Zoological Park and Kilambakkam Bus Terminus, among others.
Once completed, the corridor will integrate multiple transport networks, linking the airport with Tambaram railway station and the Kilambakkam bus terminal. This multimodal connectivity is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of Chennai’s public transport ecosystem.
Officials have confirmed that preliminary activities such as route alignment studies, land surveys and planning exercises are largely complete. The government has also granted approval to initiate land acquisition, a crucial step toward project execution. Coordination is currently underway with several agencies, including the National Highways Authority, airport authorities and the Chennai Metro Water Board, to facilitate smooth implementation.
The project, which faced delays in the past, has now regained momentum with early-stage works progressing. Authorities are optimistic that the metro extension will play a vital role in decongesting GST Road, reducing travel time between the airport and Kilambakkam, and supporting the region’s growing urbanisation.
Once operational, the new metro line is expected to benefit lakhs of daily commuters, improve accessibility to key transport hubs, and emerge as a cornerstone of Chennai’s suburban infrastructure development.
