Chennai, May 18:
Kamal Haasan, president of the Makkal Needhi Maiam, on Monday emphasized that newcomers in politics should not be underestimated and called for patience in assessing the newly formed government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
Speaking to reporters at Madurai airport after arriving from Chennai, Kamal said the people of Tamil Nadu had democratically elected the government and must now closely observe its performance. He stressed that the administration should be given at least six months before any judgment is made.
“The new government should be given time. Being new does not mean they are inexperienced. When independent India was formed, everyone was new. Newcomers cannot be underestimated, but at the same time, expectations should be realistic,” he said.
Responding to questions about the rise of Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and its formation of the government, Kamal said it was too early to draw conclusions.
“Predictions cannot be made within a few days. The people will monitor the government, and so will we,” he added, highlighting the importance of accountability and public scrutiny.
On the subject of Dravidian politics, Kamal offered a broad interpretation, stating that any political party started by a Tamil-speaking individual from Tamil Nadu could be considered part of the Dravidian movement.
He also reiterated his stance on the three-language policy, asserting that Tamil Nadu cannot be forced to adopt policies against its will.
Addressing remarks made by actor Rajinikanth regarding Vijay’s electoral victory, Kamal dismissed any notion of rivalry turning into jealousy.
“We have always competed, but there has never been jealousy between us. Competition is natural—whether in cinema or even if we had played cricket,” he said.
When asked about Chief Minister Vijay not meeting Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Kamal said he was observing the situation just like the general public, refraining from making any political speculation.
Kamal also mentioned that his visit to Madurai was to attend the launch event of the film Seyon, adding that the affection he receives from the people there remains unchanged.
Kamal Haasan’s remarks underline a call for balanced expectations and democratic patience, as Tamil Nadu witnesses a political transition with new leadership at the helm.
