Chennai, May 19:.
In a major step towards modernization, Chennai Egmore Railway Station has unveiled a new multi-level parking facility as part of its ongoing ₹842 crore redevelopment project. Located on the Gandhi-Irwin Road side, the newly opened structure is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve overall commuter convenience at one of the city’s busiest railway hubs.
The facility has been designed to cater to the increasing number of daily passengers using the station. With dedicated parking provisions for both cars and two-wheelers, authorities aim to streamline vehicle movement and reduce roadside parking issues. The multi-level complex can accommodate over 180 cars and more than 100 two-wheelers, offering a structured and efficient parking solution.
Equipped with modern infrastructure, the parking facility includes EV charging stations, CCTV surveillance, automated parking systems, public announcement systems, and advanced fire safety mechanisms. In addition to parking, commuters can access a range of amenities such as luggage lockers, pay-and-use toilets, driver rest rooms, refreshment kiosks, and vehicle cleaning services, enhancing the overall travel experience.
Special emphasis has been placed on safety and accessibility. The facility features lifts for persons with disabilities, anti-skid flooring, guard rails, and dedicated fire escape staircases, ensuring a secure environment for all users. These additions align with broader efforts to make public infrastructure more inclusive and commuter-friendly.
The opening of the parking complex comes even as redevelopment work continues across the station. Railway authorities are simultaneously working on upgraded passenger circulation areas, modern terminal infrastructure, and improved entry and exit systems to handle future demand more efficiently.
Officials have also confirmed that a second multi-level parking facility is under construction on the Poonamallee High Road side. Once the entire redevelopment project is completed, Chennai Egmore is expected to emerge as one of the most modern and well-equipped railway stations in South India.
