Chennai, May 19:
The long-pending transport connectivity project at Kilambakkam is finally nearing completion, offering major relief to thousands of daily commuters in Chennai’s southern corridor. According to the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and Southern Railway, the Kilambakkam railway station along with the integrated skywalk project is expected to be opened by the end of June 2026.
The project’s final phase is currently underway, with construction teams focusing on completing the remaining section of the elevated pedestrian skywalk. This structure will connect the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus to the upcoming suburban railway station across the busy GST Road. Officials have confirmed that crucial girder installation work is in its final stage and will be completed within the next week.
The ₹79-crore project has been designed as a comprehensive multi-modal transport solution. Key features include an elevated pedestrian skywalk, escalators and lifts, covered walkways, and direct access to the railway station. The integration is expected to significantly improve passenger movement and eliminate the need for risky road crossings on GST Road, which has long been a concern for commuters.
Once operational, the Kilambakkam railway station will play a crucial role in easing congestion and enhancing connectivity between Chennai and key suburban and southern regions such as Chengalpattu and Tambaram. The project is expected to streamline travel for passengers commuting between the city and southern districts of Tamil Nadu by offering seamless connectivity between bus and rail services.
Currently, passengers using the Kilambakkam bus terminus face heavy traffic congestion and difficulties in crossing GST Road safely. The new skywalk and railway integration aim to address these issues by providing a safe, efficient, and uninterrupted transit experience.
Railway officials have indicated that train operations can commence immediately after the skywalk integration is completed. Finishing works at the station site—located between Vandalur and Urappakkam on the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu suburban corridor—are progressing rapidly, including roofing, seating arrangements, and other passenger amenities.
Authorities also noted that earlier delays in the project were due to election-related restrictions, traffic diversion approvals, and construction challenges along the high-traffic GST Road stretch. With the revised deadline now set for the end of June, commuters are eagerly awaiting the launch of what is expected to become one of Chennai’s most important transport integration hubs.
