Chennai, May 23:

Summer heat continues to intensify across Tamil Nadu, with temperatures crossing 100°F in at least 17 locations, causing widespread discomfort among residents. The rising temperatures have made daytime conditions increasingly harsh, especially in interior and urban regions.

According to weather reports, Vellore recorded the highest temperature in the State at 109°F. Several other places, including Tiruttani, Chennai (Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam), Erode, Tiruchirappalli, and Madurai, also witnessed extremely high temperatures.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has warned that temperatures in coastal Tamil Nadu, including parts of Pudukkottai and Karaikal, could rise by another 2 to 4 degrees Celsius until May 25. Heatwave conditions are also likely to prevail in isolated parts of Chennai.

The heatwave is not limited to Tamil Nadu, with several regions across India experiencing extreme temperatures. New Delhi, parts of Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are facing severe heat conditions. Among the hottest locations, Banda recorded a scorching 118°F, while Khammam saw temperatures reach 115°F. Delhi touched 113°F, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting continued heatwave conditions over the next week.

Authorities have advised the public to avoid exposure to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
