Director-turned-actor Prashant Pandiyaraj has revealed that his decision to step in front of the camera for the rural crime series Warrant was driven purely by the demands of the story. Making his acting debut in the series directed by Vignesh Natarajan, Prashant said the lead role required a face that audiences had no preconceived notions about.
Speaking about the choice, he explained that after completing the script, the team felt strongly that casting a known actor would dilute the character’s impact. “The audience should not have any image of the person playing the role. They should not know anything about him,” he said, adding that time constraints also played a crucial role. With a tight schedule—from commencing shoot on January 5 to releasing the series on May 22—the team had limited time to identify, train, and film with a new actor. Initially planned as a seven-episode series, Warrant eventually expanded to eight episodes as the narrative evolved, with strong backing from ZEE5.
Prashant further revealed that it was director Vignesh who spotted him as a potential fit for the role, which required someone physically unfit to play a policeman. “He saw my physique and suggested I lose some weight. He wanted to try me for the role, and ZEE5 also supported the idea,” he said. The series follows Koattai Karuppusamy, a second-grade constable whose vulnerabilities and inner conflicts shape his approach to law enforcement, offering a layered take on power and justice.
Having now established himself both behind and in front of the camera, Prashant said he intends to pursue both paths going forward. “I like both acting and directing. I would want to do both,” he said with a smile. Known for directing the critically acclaimed series Vilangu and the film Maaman, Prashant’s latest venture features a strong ensemble cast including Balaji Sakthivel, Kousalya, Kaali Venkat, Namritha MV, Arul Jothi, Arul Dass, and Chaya Devi. With music by Sam C. S., the series delves into the darker realities of routine policing that spiral into complex moral dilemmas.
