Chennai,  June 1:

The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS), launched by the Government of India, aims to significantly enhance youth employability by providing structured internship opportunities and real-world workplace exposure. The ambitious programme seeks to benefit one crore young people over the next five years, positioning itself as a key bridge between education and industry demands.

Under the scheme, selected candidates will undergo practical training in leading companies, equipping them with essential professional skills and improving job readiness. The pilot phase for 2024–25 has been designed to offer 1.25 lakh internship opportunities, setting the stage for a nationwide rollout in the coming years.

The scheme is open to individuals aged between 18 and 25 years who are not engaged in full-time employment. Candidates trained through ITIs and recognised skill development centres are eligible to apply. However, graduates from premier institutions such as IITs and IIMs, as well as professionals holding qualifications like CA and CMA, have been excluded to ensure the benefits reach a broader segment of youth.

The internship programme will run for a duration of 12 months, with at least six months dedicated to hands-on work experience. Participants will receive monthly financial assistance from the government, along with additional support from participating companies through CSR initiatives. The scheme also provides a one-time grant for incidental expenses and includes insurance coverage under government-backed programmes.

Eligible candidates can apply online through the official portal by completing registration, submitting personal and educational details, uploading required documents, and selecting preferred sectors or companies. A multilingual helpline (1800 116 090) has also been set up to assist applicants with registration and related queries.
