Chennai, June 2:
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) recorded a significant rise in ridership in May, with total passenger numbers crossing 90.14 lakh, marking a notable increase compared to 89.09 lakh in May last year.
According to official data, the highest single-day ridership was registered on May 18, with over 3.54 lakh passengers using metro services, surpassing last year’s peak of 3.23 lakh. The steady growth reflects increasing reliance on metro connectivity across the city.
The data also revealed changing ticketing trends, with 42.51 lakh passengers using National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC), while QR-based ticketing saw strong usage across platforms. Additionally, 4.20 lakh commuters opted for WhatsApp ticketing and 2.51 lakh used PhonePe. Special event QR tickets were also popular, with 31,444 passengers during IPL match days and 18,468 during a recent Ilaiyaraaja concert.
