Chennai, June 12:
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai has called on the State government to enact a special law to prevent honour killings, following the alleged murder of a young woman in Thoothukudi district.
Condemning the killing of Abiselvi near Kayathar, he said the woman was allegedly murdered by her mother and brother for being in a relationship with a youth from another community. He further alleged that the family attempted to portray the death as a suicide by poisoning and rushed the final rites to conceal the crime.
Welcoming the swift police action that led to the arrest of the accused, Selvaperunthagai said the incident highlights the continued prevalence of caste-based violence in the State.
He demanded stringent punishment for those involved and urged the government to introduce a dedicated law to curb honour killings. He also stressed the need for effective protection mechanisms in every district to safeguard couples entering inter-community marriages.
Emphasising that caste pride should never outweigh human life, he said society must support and protect inter-caste relationships to build an equal and caste-free future.
