Chennai, June 12:
The Madras High Court has dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the promotion of seven Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officers to the rank of Chief Secretary.
The petition had questioned the legality of the State government’s order promoting the officers, including senior bureaucrats such as T. Udhayachandran, and alleged that prior approval from the Union government was not obtained as required under service rules.
However, the court rejected the plea as not maintainable, holding that service-related matters cannot ordinarily be raised through a PIL. The bench observed that such disputes fall within administrative and service law mechanisms rather than public interest jurisdiction.
With this ruling, the promotions granted by the State government remain in effect, and the challenge stands dismissed.
