Chennai, June 12:
The 16-km Velachery–Tambaram High Road in Chennai is set to be renamed after Major Mukund Varadharajan, the Indian Army officer who was killed in action and posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award.
The decision is being seen as a tribute to the officer’s bravery and sacrifice for the nation. The stretch is one of Chennai’s key arterial corridors, connecting major suburban zones including Velachery, Selaiyur, and Tambaram, and handling heavy daily traffic.
Authorities said the renaming aims to honour Major Mukund’s legacy and inspire public recognition of armed forces personnel who have served the country with distinction. The move adds to a growing list of civic tributes in his name across Chennai and surrounding areas.
The official notification and implementation of the new road name are expected to follow standard administrative procedures in the coming days.
