Chennai, June 16:

In a major boost to the city’s public transport system, the Chennai Beach–St. Thomas Mount MRTS corridor is likely to be handed over to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), subject to approval from the Railways.

If cleared, CMRL plans to undertake a comprehensive upgrade project worth ₹4,500 crore. The proposal includes modernization of rail infrastructure, redevelopment of 21 MRTS stations, and improved passenger amenities.

Officials aim to complete the upgrade by the end of 2028, which is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and commuter experience.

The move is seen as a key step towards integrating the MRTS network with the Metro Rail system and creating a more seamless urban transport network in Chennai.
