Chennai, June 16:

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has successfully cleared 15,710 metric tonnes of construction and demolition waste across the city within just two weeks, from May 27 to June 9, 2026.

The massive cleanup drive is part of the Corporation’s efforts to improve city cleanliness and manage waste more effectively. Special measures have been taken to prevent illegal dumping in public areas such as roads, residential zones, water bodies, and bus stops.

Authorities stated that waste up to one metric tonne is collected free of cost, while charges are applied for larger quantities. Strict action has also been taken against violators, with fines imposed on those dumping waste illegally.

Officials said the initiative has helped improve urban hygiene, reduce pollution, and promote sustainable waste management practices in Chennai.
