Chennai Mayor R. Priya has lodged a formal complaint with the cybercrime wing of the city police, alleging sustained online harassment by unidentified individuals through morphed videos and defamatory content shared on social media platforms.
According to the complaint, the harassment has been ongoing for the past few days and has caused significant mental distress. The perpetrators are said to have repeatedly targeted the mayor by circulating derogatory comments, altered images, and manipulated videos intended to damage her reputation. The complaint also mentions that the individuals closely monitored her social media activity and persistently engaged in online abuse.
Mayor Priya initially filed an online complaint before personally meeting the Commissioner of Police, A. Amalraj, and submitting a detailed written complaint. She has requested immediate legal action against those responsible for creating and spreading the objectionable content. The complaint reportedly includes a list of multiple social media accounts involved in sharing such material.
Cybercrime officials have begun an investigation and are currently examining digital evidence, including social media posts, account activity, and technical data, to trace the origin of the content and identify the individuals behind it.
Authorities have assured that appropriate legal measures will be taken once the culprits are identified, as the case highlights growing concerns over cyberstalking, online abuse, and misuse of digital platforms targeting public figures.
