Director R. Venkataramanan, known for ‘Appa Venaamppa’, is set to release his next film ‘Mutharkanal’ this July. The film centers on the growing menace of drug abuse and its devastating impact on today’s youth and their families.
Produced by R. Pothiraj DFT under the banner of Srigenga Productions, the film has Venkataramanan handling story, screenplay, and dialogues, apart from directing. The movie features a large ensemble of newcomers including Ashwin, Vignesh, Rajesh, Yogesh, Lakshmanan, Aadhi, and several others, bringing fresh faces to the narrative.
After showcasing the harmful effects of alcoholism on families in his earlier film, the director now shifts focus to synthetic drug addiction. The story explores how easily accessible substances are trapping school students, college youth, and young professionals, leading to rapid personal and social deterioration.
Speaking about the film, Venkataramanan said that synthetic drugs are far more dangerous than alcohol due to their quick and severe impact. His visits to rehabilitation centres exposed him to the harsh reality of young individuals losing control of their lives to addiction. This firsthand experience inspired him to create ‘Mutharkanal’.
While addressing a serious social issue, the film is also designed as a commercial entertainer with family appeal. The director himself appears in the film in a lawyer’s role
The technical team includes cinematographer Kandasamy Gopal DFT, music composer Meeralal, and editor Dishyan Sarathi. Lyrics have been penned by Maruthaparani, Mohan, and Aathur Periyasamy.
With a strong social message and engaging storytelling, ‘Mutharkanal’ is slated for a theatrical release this July.
