The upcoming Vadapalani–Poonamallee corridor under Chennai Metro Phase 2 is set to significantly improve urban mobility in the city. Spanning 14.6 kilometres, the new stretch is expected to drastically reduce travel time between the two key locations from nearly 90 minutes to just around 30 minutes, offering much-needed relief to daily commuters who currently face heavy traffic congestion along this route.
This corridor will play a crucial role in strengthening connectivity across Chennai’s western and central regions. Key areas such as Poonamallee, Porur, and Vadapalani will be seamlessly linked, while interconnections with the existing metro network will allow commuters to travel conveniently towards Chennai Central and the airport. The integration with Phase 1 ensures smoother transit across major commercial and residential hubs.
Officials indicate that the project is nearing completion, with safety clearances already in place for initial operations. The metro services are expected to be rolled out soon, possibly in phases, before full-scale operations begin. Once operational, the corridor will not only ease traffic congestion but also promote faster, safer, and more efficient public transportation.
As part of the larger Chennai Metro Phase 2 expansion, this stretch represents a significant step toward modernising the city’s infrastructure. With improved connectivity and reduced travel time, the Vadapalani–Poonamallee line is expected to become a vital link in Chennai’s growing metro network.
