Chennai, July 16:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the redeveloped Chennai Park railway station via video conferencing on July 17, marking the completion of a key urban infrastructure upgrade under the Centre’s ambitious station modernisation programme.

The redevelopment of the station has been carried out at a cost of ₹14.79 crore as part of the Amrit Station Scheme. The Chennai facility will be among 75 railway stations across the country that are being inaugurated simultaneously as part of the initiative aimed at enhancing passenger experience and modernising railway infrastructure.

According to officials of Southern Railway, the upgraded station now features a redesigned entrance complete with a canopy and a landmark tower, giving it a more contemporary appearance. The booking office has been modernised with improved waiting areas, while platforms have been resurfaced and equipped with additional shelters and a new roofing system.

Passenger amenities have also been significantly enhanced. Two lifts have been installed to facilitate easy access to the foot overbridge, particularly benefiting elderly passengers and persons with disabilities. Dedicated pedestrian pathways have been created to ensure seamless connectivity between the railway station and the city’s Mass Rapid Transit System.

Officials said special emphasis has been placed on accessibility and commuter convenience, with barrier-free infrastructure incorporated throughout the station. The redesign also aims to streamline passenger movement within the premises and enable smoother integration with other modes of transport.

The redevelopment of Chennai Park station is part of a broader push by Indian Railways to transform key transit hubs into modern, user-friendly spaces while preserving their functional efficiency.
