Chennai, July 16:
With a severe heatwave forecast across Tamil Nadu, health experts and authorities have sounded an urgent call to safeguard vulnerable groups, particularly senior citizens, who are at higher risk of heat-related illnesses.
According to advisories issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures in several parts of the State are expected to remain significantly above normal over the coming days. The warning has prompted medical professionals to stress the importance of preventive care, especially for the elderly, who often have reduced tolerance to extreme heat.
“Senior citizens are more susceptible to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke because their bodies do not regulate temperature as efficiently,” said Dr. R. Kumar, a Chennai-based geriatric specialist. “Even a short exposure to high temperatures can lead to serious complications if precautions are not taken.”
Doctors advise that elderly individuals should remain indoors during peak heat hours, typically between 11 am and 4 pm. Homes should be kept well-ventilated, and the use of fans, coolers or air conditioning is strongly recommended. “Hydration is critical. Even if they do not feel thirsty, seniors must be encouraged to drink water regularly,” added Dr. Kumar.
Family members and caregivers also play a crucial role during such conditions. “Many elderly people live alone or may not recognise early symptoms of heat stress,” said social worker Meena Krishnan. “Regular check-ins, either in person or over phone, can make a significant difference.”
Nutritionists suggest light, easily digestible meals and increased intake of fruits with high water content such as watermelon and cucumber. Caffeinated and sugary drinks should be avoided, as they may contribute to dehydration.
Health officials also emphasise the importance of recognising warning signs. Symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, nausea, rapid heartbeat or confusion should not be ignored. “If any of these signs appear, immediate medical attention is necessary,” said a senior official from the State Health Department.
Authorities have also urged the public to follow official updates and advisories issued by the IMD and local administration. Community-level awareness, they say, is essential to prevent avoidable health emergencies during extreme weather events.
As Tamil Nadu braces for intense heat, experts reiterate that timely precautions, awareness and collective responsibility are key to ensuring that senior citizens remain safe during the challenging days ahead.
