Thoothukudi, July 20:
Markandeyan, the DMK MLA from Vilathikulam, was arrested early Monday following allegations that he made threatening remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay during a public meeting.
The controversy stems from a speech delivered by the legislator at a DMK-organised thanksgiving gathering held in Kovilpatti in Thoothukudi district. During the event, Markandeyan allegedly made remarks perceived as threatening towards the Chief Minister, which later went viral on social media, triggering widespread criticism.
According to police sources, “A complaint was received regarding objectionable and threatening statements made in a public forum. Based on this, action has been taken as per law.”
In the speech, Markandeyan reportedly used strong and provocative language while addressing party workers, leading to sharp reactions from political circles and the public alike. Several groups condemned the remarks, calling for immediate legal action.
Following a formal complaint lodged with the district police authorities by members of a rival political outfit, a case was registered and the MLA was taken into custody from his residence in Vilathikulam during the early hours of the day.
Police officials confirmed the arrest, stating, “He has been taken for inquiry and will be produced before the court after due procedure.”
The arrest sparked protests from Markandeyan’s supporters, who gathered near his residence and raised slogans against the police action. Tensions briefly escalated as some supporters attempted to block the police vehicle transporting the MLA.
