New Delhi, July 23:
A protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar turned violent for the third consecutive day, leaving at least five police personnel injured after protesters allegedly hurled stones and bottles at security forces.
According to Delhi Police, the clashes broke out around 8.30 pm near Tolstoy Marg in Connaught Place when a section of protesters turned aggressive. Among those injured were senior officers, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police.
Police said the crowd moved from the designated protest site towards adjoining roads before attacking personnel. Some protesters were also allegedly carrying sticks and sharp weapons.
Security forces, including the Rapid Action Force, initially attempted to calm the situation. However, as violence escalated, personnel resorted to limited force and fired two to three tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Authorities confirmed the situation was later brought under control, with heavy deployment continuing in the area.
Officials claimed that a section of the mob surrounded and assaulted a policeman in what appeared to be an attempted lynching. The officer was rescued after intervention by security personnel.
