Coimbatore, July 27:

Tamil Nadu Minister for Backward Classes Welfare V. Sampath Kumar on Sunday said the government would take appropriate action if concrete evidence is submitted regarding alleged corruption in the establishment of Semmozhi Poonga in Coimbatore.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating indoor sports facilities at Nehru Stadium, the minister stressed that any complaint must be backed by proof for the government to proceed. The remarks come in the wake of allegations by a Congress councillor, who recently claimed irregularities to the tune of ₹40 crore in the execution of the project during the previous regime.

Responding to queries on the Supreme Court’s directions regarding the appointment of 54 junior assistants in the Coimbatore Corporation, Sampath Kumar said the order would be implemented as per due procedure. He also denied allegations of political pressure influencing officials in the matter.

On criticism of TVK ministers turning emotional after watching the film Jananayagan, the minister said he had been a long-time admirer of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. “Since it is his last film, we became emotional. There is no need to politicise it,” he said.

Addressing concerns over opposition to the proposed sewage treatment plant at Chinnavedampatti, he assured that the project would not inconvenience residents and highlighted the need for better public awareness about its benefits.

The minister also noted that construction of the Periyar Library is progressing steadily and the facility would soon be opened for public use.
