Chennai, July 27:
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) collected 36.64 metric tonnes of bulky household waste from 105 locations across the city as part of its weekly special drive.
Officials said 43 vehicles were deployed on Saturday to collect items such as old sofas, mattresses, wooden furniture and other large household waste that cannot be handled through regular garbage collection systems. The collected waste was transported to the Kodungaiyur facility for processing and incineration.
The weekly bulky waste collection initiative, launched in October 2025, enables residents to dispose of large items safely and prevents dumping in public spaces such as roadsides and vacant plots.
Under the system, sanitation workers visit households that register in advance and carry out collections every Saturday. Residents can request the service through the Namma Chennai app, by calling the GCC helpline, or via WhatsApp.
The Corporation has urged the public to make use of the initiative to ensure cleaner neighbourhoods and improve overall waste management in the city.
