Chennai, July 27:

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has delayed the opening of the Koyambedu–Alandur stretch under Phase II, with operations now expected to begin in early 2027 instead of the earlier mid-2026 target.

Officials attributed the delay to a shortage of workers and construction-related challenges, including utility shifting and restrictions on night-time work. Despite this, the project has made significant progress, with the viaduct nearing completion, around 16 km of track laid, and overhead electrical works currently under way.

CMRL said civil works are likely to be completed by October 2026. This will be followed by trial runs, signalling installation, safety checks and regulatory approvals before the corridor is opened to the public.

Once operational, the stretch will offer seamless interchange with the existing Metro network at key stations such as Koyambedu, Vadapalani and Alandur, improving connectivity across the city.

The Phase II expansion is expected to play a crucial role in easing traffic congestion and strengthening Chennai’s urban transport infrastructure.
