Chennai, July 27:
Tamil Nadu Minister N. Anand on Monday flagged off desilting works along the Cooum River near Koyambedu in Chennai and later conducted an on-site inspection by entering the river.

The desilting and maintenance works were initiated at Padi Kuppam near Koyambedu as part of efforts to restore water flow and improve the condition of the Cooum River. The project is being undertaken by the Water Resources Department in coordination with civic agencies and volunteer organisations.

Facing heavy traffic congestion on Poonamallee High Road, the Minister left his official vehicle midway to ensure timely participation in the event. He then rode pillion on a two-wheeler belonging to a department staff member to reach the venue without delay.

Prior to the formal launch, special rituals were performed at the site to ensure the smooth execution of the works. The Minister then flagged off the desilting operations, marking the official commencement of the clean-up drive.

Soon after, wearing a safety helmet, Mr. Anand stepped into the Cooum River and carried out a field inspection. He interacted with operators of poclain machines and instructed them to strictly adhere to safety norms during the desilting process.

Officials said the works would involve the removal of water hyacinth, floating vegetation, shrubs, and solid waste that obstruct the natural flow of water. The cleaning operations, starting from the Padi Kuppam causeway, are expected to benefit areas such as Choolaimedu, Egmore, and Chintadripet by ensuring the free flow of rainwater and floodwater.
