Chennai is set to witness the return of double-decker buses after nearly 18 years, with the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) planning to introduce 20 modern air-conditioned buses to strengthen the city’s public transport network.
According to official sources, the technical bids for procuring the buses were opened on July 31, marking a key step in the project. The evaluation process is currently underway, and further stages of finalisation are expected to follow.
The reintroduction of double-decker buses—once an iconic feature of Chennai’s roads—is aimed at enhancing commuter capacity on busy routes while offering a more comfortable travel experience.
Officials said the new fleet would play a significant role in improving urban mobility, catering to both daily commuters and visitors, and adding a distinctive element to the city’s evolving transport infrastructure.
Once operational, the air-conditioned double-decker buses are expected to boost passenger handling capacity and become a prominent addition to Chennai’s public transport system.
