The case against Tamil Nadu Opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin stems from a DMK-led protest in Thanjavur on August 3, where he criticised the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government over key issues including Cauvery water rights, the proposed Mekedatu dam, and the waiver of farm loans.
During his address, Udhayanidhi alleged that rivers in the Cauvery Delta had run dry, raising concerns over the State’s water management. Drawing a political comparison, he questioned whether such a situation would have arisen had former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi been in office, thereby invoking the DMK’s past governance record.
The situation escalated when, amid slogans from the crowd, Udhayanidhi made controversial remarks targeting Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay after supporters chanted actor Trisha’s name. The comments were widely perceived as derogatory, triggering sharp criticism from political leaders, members of the film industry, and the public.
Following the incident, a complaint was filed by the TVK women’s wing in Thanjavur. Acting on the complaint, police registered a case against Udhayanidhi under six sections, including provisions of the Information Technology Act. The charges relate to alleged objectionable content and its circulation, particularly in connection with the speech and its aftermath on digital platforms.
The TVK women’s wing has intensified its response by organising protests across multiple districts, including Erode, condemning Udhayanidhi’s remarks and demanding stringent legal action. Party functionaries have termed the comments “offensive and unacceptable,” especially towards women.
Meanwhile, Udhayanidhi has denied wrongdoing, claiming that his speech was “doctored” and misrepresented. He has maintained that the controversy is being used as a diversion from core issues such as Cauvery water sharing and the Mekedatu project. Asserting that he is prepared to face the case legally, he said the truth would emerge through due process.
