Chennai, Aug 6:
A 29-year-old graduate was caught by members of the public and railway police after he allegedly snatched a gold chain from a young woman at Pazhavanthangal railway station.
The victim, Abhinaya (21) from Chengalpattu, had come to visit her relatives and was at the station near the ticket counter when the incident took place. The accused, who was standing nearby, suddenly snatched the gold chain from her neck and attempted to escape.
Startled, Abhinaya raised an alarm, following which Railway Police constable Kumaravel, along with the public, chased and overpowered the young man within a short distance.
During investigation, the accused was identified as Manikandan (29), a native of Tiruvarur district. Police said he is a B.Sc. Hotel Management graduate who had come to Chennai in search of a job. Unable to find employment and reportedly struggling for food, he resorted to chain snatching.
The 8-gram gold chain was recovered from him and returned to Abhinaya. The Parangimalai Railway Police have registered a case, and Manikandan has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is in progress.
