Raising the contentious Mekedatu dam issue in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin urged the state government to convene an all-party meeting to discuss Karnataka’s fast-tracked moves on the project.
Speaking during the session, Udhayanidhi stressed that the Mekedatu dam proposal poses a serious threat to Tamil Nadu’s share of Cauvery water and the livelihood of delta farmers. He insisted that such a crucial inter-state issue should be addressed through a united political approach, bringing together all parties to safeguard the state’s interests.
The demand comes amid heightened tensions over the long-standing Cauvery dispute, with opposition parties intensifying pressure on the government to take a firm stand. Recent political developments have also seen protests and calls for coordinated action against Karnataka’s plans.
However, the ruling side maintained that the issue should not be politicised, even as the opposition continued to push for broader consultations. The debate in the Assembly reflects the growing political divide over how best to handle the sensitive Mekedatu and Cauvery water dispute.
